How to Actually Have Something to Watch on a Long Flight
Streaming apps quietly expire their offline downloads, usually while you are somewhere with no signal. Local files do not do that.
The specific misery: you downloaded three films in the streaming app the night before, you get to cruising altitude, you open the app, and two of them have expired. Offline mode in a streaming app is a licence with a timer, not a file.
Why app downloads expire
Streaming offline modes are licensed viewing windows. The file is encrypted, the app holds a time-limited key, and it phones home to check. When the window closes the title disappears. Some expire 48 hours after you start watching; some expire 30 days after download; some expire when the platform's own licence for that title lapses, which can be any time at all.
None of this is a bug. It is the deal. But it means the one moment you cannot renew the licence — no signal — is precisely the moment you find out.
What to do instead
For anything freely available, download an ordinary file. It has no timer, no check-in and no app requirement, and any player will open it.
Build the list as you go
Keep a note somewhere and drop links into it whenever you see something you would rather watch later. By the time you travel, the list has assembled itself.
Queue it the night before
Paste the whole list, one per line. Boo runs five at once, so a long list finishes while you pack rather than while you are trying to leave for the airport.
Pick 1080p
On a laptop screen at seat-back distance, 1080p is genuinely enough, and it is roughly a third of the size of 4K. More things fit, and they download faster.
Take audio for some of it
Long interviews, talks and mixes are frequently better with the screen off, and MP3 costs a fraction of the space. It also does considerably better things for your battery.

- 720p video — about 500MB per hour.
- MP3 audio — about 60MB per hour.
An eight-hour flight is comfortably under 10GB at 1080p. Add a couple of hours of audio for the taxi and the queue.
Two practical notes
Charge everything, and remember that decoding video is one of the more battery-expensive things a laptop does — audio-only for part of the journey genuinely helps.
